12 Questions to Ask Your Outdoor Wedding Venue

Outdoor weddings feel effortless because someone planned relentlessly. If your heart is set on open sky — meadow, garden, tent or lawn — these twelve questions separate venues that do outdoors weekly from ones that merely allow it.

Ground, power and water

Is the ground level and mown, or will heels sink? Where does power come from — house current or generators, and who pays for them? Where is water for catering, bars and restrooms? Outdoor venues run on infrastructure; confirm it exists.

Weather, wind and backup

What is the wind plan for florals, candles and tent walls? At what forecast does the backup trigger, and who calls it? The best venues have made the call dozens of times and can describe exactly how it works.

Restrooms, lighting and sound

Luxury restroom trailers for 150+ guests are non-negotiable past a certain size. Ask when the grounds lighting comes on, whether speeches need a PA outdoors, and how late amplified sound runs under local rules.

Guests, bugs and the little things

How do elderly guests cross the lawn? What is the mosquito plan in June? Where do guests wait if a shower passes? The venues that answer these without blinking are the ones you want.

Take this list on every tour

  • Ask for photos of the same space in the rain — and in peak summer.
  • Confirm the bug plan: spraying schedule, fans, citronella, timeline.
  • Check sunset time for your date and plan portraits around it.
  • Make sure rideshares can find the entrance at midnight.
  • Put the backup decision time in the contract, not in a handshake.
